Runner and Physical Therapist

Greetings !

My name is Jessica Mena, and I am a licensed Physical Therapist practicing in the Los Angeles Area.  I was born and raised in southern California in the small city of Reseda and I have been a runner for more than half my life (16 years now). I ran my first marathon at age 13 and have not stopped since. Running is my passion! I ran on a Division III collegiate national competitive team, I have ran for fun, for sport, for charity, for sanity, for clarity, for brainstorming. I run because that’s just me.

I landed in the physical therapy realm very organically and I am beyond grateful that I did because I feel that I was meant to be a physical therapist.  I graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2015. In 2018 I completed a 12 month postdoctoral Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency at one of the top Ortho residencies in the country. On top of that I just recently complete another 12 months of the Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship with Kaiser Permanente.  You can say that when I put my mind to something I stick with it and work really hard to further develop my skills.  I am not satisfied with being okay, as a athlete and now a health care provided I always ask myself, how can I be better? What more can I do? What can I improve?

I call it perseverance and I have heard some people call it grit.

Naturally as I was reflecting and developing some personal goals, I came to the realization it was time to launch a site where I could merge my awesome career and my passion for running. So that is where I developed  TEMPO: The Elite Movement and Performance Organization.

I have developed this website in order to be able to reach out to my community. To the people just starting to run, to the novice runners, the competitive runners, the weekend warriors, the obstacle races, the joggers, the mommy runners, the master runners, the walkers, the walk-joggers, the treadmill runners, the hill climbers, and the ones thinking about running.  The goal is to provide really valuable information about some tools that can be used in order to help with your running journey, to help prevent injuries, to get you stronger. I want to help you run smart.  This site was developed to provide and avenue for people to submit questions, feedback, or topics that they would to hear more about. My goal is to provide highly validated scientific research and respected knowledge to support everything that I post.  This page will be a collection of many foundational exercises and key concepts within the realms of exercise, mobility, strength, endurance, stability, mechanics, training, and coaching.

I hope you enjoy reading these articles and much as I enjoy writing them for you.

Stay healthy, positive, and keep training smart!
